Greta Gretler
GRETA GERTLER is a prolific singer-songwriter-pianist who in recent years has spent much time abroad performing, writing and recording.
Starting her career with exquisite 'chamber pop' of Peccadillo, which featured members of rock'n'roll string quartet Fourplay, she released one album and then followed her muse to New York.
She will soon bring back a taste of her newest project, “EDIBLE RESTAURANT”, an album featuring THE EXTROVERTS, her sublime ensemble that sounds a bit like the band from some strange, off-off-off-off-off-Broadway musical as it surrounds her 'seriously lovely voice' (Mark Ribot).
Greta met the members of The Extroverts two years ago, whilst she was a cocktail waitress at Barbes, a tiny music venue in Brooklyn. The Extroverts come from diverse musical backgrounds – the Brooklyn Balkan scene (Slavic Soul Party!, Gogol Bordello), free pop, contemporary classical, Brill Building-era pop, country, blues, swing and klezmer - and prominently feature extraordinary tuba player, Ron Caswell (whose personality inspired the name of the band) and mobile percussion unit, Matt Moran, as the rhythm section; plus electric guitarist, Pete ‘Xtroverto’ Galub, and lapsteel/guitarist, Michael Gomez.
The forthcoming album “EDIBLE RESTAURANT” was mixed by Bryce Goggin (Pavement, The Ramones, Joan as Policewoman), and features a striking new body of songs by Greta. All written in New York since 2002 – an eventful time for Greta, personally, the lyrics explore themes of cultural displacement, a longing for home, Jewish identity, the subconscious and the meaning of food. The making of the album began when Greta took the band into Monkey Boy Studios (Martha Wainwright) after a year of solid performing. In one day, they tracked the bulk of the album. Many of the songs are first takes of the band playing together, with minimal overdubbing or effects, and Greta’s guide vocal as the lead. Later on, Greta asked several “guestroverts” to add additional textures to the songs in her home studio - Clare Muldaur (vocals), Olivier Manchon (violin, Sufjan Stevens), Josh Camp (vocals, One Ring Zero), Jonathan Maron (bass, Groove Collective) and Eliot Krimsky (organ, Flying).
